What you can do about making the most of this one precious life today

Ever feel like your life is passing you by? As I am in my late 30s approaching 40, I have been evaluating how I spend my days.  Does my life align with my values?  With the passing of my aunt recently in her late 60s, I’ve been thinking hard about how short life is.  I imagine I’m on my deathbed and reflecting back on my life.  Which memories would stand out the most?  How will I wanted to have spent my time ?  What would I want my life to look like?  What are some potential regrets?  The answers to these questions help guide me on how to live a life congruent with who I am.  Try this exercise and visualize the life you want in all areas.  Start taking baby steps to create exactly that life.  Little by little, you will get there.

The full questioning of my life began in the beginning of the pandemic during which I happen to pick up Glennon Doyle’s book Untamed.  She discusses her own personal journey to being true to who she always was.  Spoiler alert: she originally was a Christian blogger and ends up realizing she is in love with a woman while her marriage is falling apart.  She had actually written books on how to have a good marriage, so you can imagine how polarizing it must have been when she decided to be honest with herself and the world.  That took some serious fucking courage, but it’s no surprise that she did that.  Women are so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for.  Change, of course, can be terrifying especially if you crave consistency and routine.

Taking a chance to do something different may be extremely uncomfortable and nerve-racking, however, once we are on the other side, we can emerge free.

If you find yourself wanting the days to end and don’t feel like you are making the most of your dear time, it’s time to make a change.  In spite of what you may think, the reality is that you are in COMPLETE control of your life experience.

You get to choose.  You get to decide.  You get to live the way you want.

We never know how much time we have left.  So we have to try to make the most of today.  Start with a baby step; perhaps just a thought.  Thinking and imagining is the first part of making a change.  I challenge that to do that today.

We have one precious life and no time to waste.
