The Secret of Combatting Stress and Overwhelm
For the majority of my life, I experienced constant stress and overwhelm. It was excruciating and humiliating. I was so embarrassed that I felt this way. If my voice went shrill at any moment, I hated myself for it. Similarly, I would find shrill or high strung auras triggering. There it is-a vulnerable piece of me out there in the universe.
To combat this feeling, I would work out and meditate and yet that wasn’t enough. I connected with friends and this still wasn’t enough. I was equipped with plenty of tools in my toolbox and nevertheless felt like tearing my hair out.
How did I improve this feeling and find happiness?
Coaching coupled with mindfulness allowed me to finally gain some much needed distance between myself and my thoughts and feelings. I could breathe easier. I was no longer swallowed whole by what was going on with my brain. I began to understand that the brain has a certain way of functioning and that it will always do its thing. The brain does what it does. Our understanding of our brain’s default mode network that loops continuously empowers us in anticipating what’s coming so we can react accordingly. Stress will present itself. We can’t shun it. We can’t control what is presented to us. We can, however, control our response. We can control how much we allow ourselves to get sucked in to our own mind drama.
Coaching presents us with tools to understand that our thoughts and feelings ultimately yield our results. This is so inspiring. We have so much more jurisdiction in our lives than we perceive. Mindfulness meditation practice emphasizes observation of the body and musings of the mind. We can label thoughts or feelings, notice them, and then go back to our breath as the anchor that creates distance from the mind. This practice provides space from our core and our brains. We learn to not get completely consumed by our emotions. Emotional rollercoasters retreat from our lives and we find equilibrium.
With small shifts and work, you can proactively handle your life and begin to find balance and happiness within yourself no matter what.
