My proven method on how to get focused

I have always been a restless person.  Prior to coaching and mindfulness, I used to feel distracted and was always looking forward to the next thing.  I started thinking about savoring the moment when I graduated from medical school and realized how quickly that time flew by.  Those were actually some of the best days of my life.  I lived in New Orleans, how could they not be?

When I was having a bad day, for example after a fight with my spouse, I would find myself scrolling on my phone constantly between patients.  Googling articles of “how to fight better” or scrolling on social media to not feel so empty.  I would disconnect from myself because I didn’t want to sit with the discomfort.  I would feel distracted because all of the stress manifested as a swirly whirlwind of chaotic thoughts consuming my mind.

After consistent mindfulness meditation practice, I learned to become an observer of my thoughts and feelings.  I no longer equated my identity with my thoughts and feelings.  I was able to have a healthy distance.  Eventually, through applying mindfulness to my daily life, I was able to sit with discomfort and know it would go away.  I could find peace (through mind-body connection and breathing) at most moments, some situations easier than others, of course.

Feeling a sense of peace and inner stability, I was able to feel less restless.  Distraction had less of a role in my life.  Sitting quietly with myself was no longer a struggle.  I learned to soak in all parts of life, good and bad, and no longer ran away from my emotions.

I have placed limits on my social media through the time limits setting on my iPhone.  I allow myself to be a little restless some days, knowing that my effort for mindfulness takes up the majority of my time.  I give myself grace.

I feel less distracted and more calm.

I’m a work in progress, but I am so much better off than I was before.  I’m truly happy within myself.  There are external factors I wish to change at times and I know I am learning, growing, and addressing them.
