Learn How To Start Living Your Dream Life

So many of my clients and physicians complain about their job structure.  They want something different but they just don’t know how to get it.  Their brains which have served them so well in their careers limit them.  At face value, medicine appears rigid with career trajectories, never ending call schedules, and midnight-startle-you-out-of-your-sleep phone calls.  Doctors feel trapped in a traditional job when the culture of medicine feels increasingly toxic.  Burnout rates and physician suicide are at an all time high.  Physicians feel helpless and hopeless.

What if we could think outside the box and create a vision of the life we want?  Career and otherwise?

We can do hard things.  We can do almost anything.

I had a client in a “lifestyle specialty” who wasn’t satisfied at her job.  She entertained looking at other positions, she spoke to people who had nontraditional roles in her field, and began dreaming of her ideal practice.  She wanted to spend her time on research more than clinically.

She began mapping out what that would look like and how she could do it.

 The solution was so simple.

She needed grant money to replace her clinical income and buy herself time freedom.

She presented this to her boss and voila!

Ask and you shall receive.

She began applying for grants, won one, and began living her ideal work life.

Dream job realized.

It was that easy.

A surgeon client of mine had just accepted a job in academia from private practice.  She was nervous when negotiating salary.  I asked her what she thought was fair.  She gave me the amount and we doubled it.  She did not believe she would get her ask.

Low and behold, she received a reply from her new administration that they would match her asking salary.  She was shocked! A year later, she told me she should have asked for more!

So often we are afraid of what’s on the other side of daring to ask, daring to change, or daring to dream.  We sell ourselves short.  We are female physicians.  Like Glennon Doyle says in “Untamed,” we are cheetahs trapped in a cage.  We need to run free.

Check out this book or if reading’s not your jam, try the premise on for size.  What would it look like to run free?  What if you could create the life of your dreams?  What if you could shed the worry of what others think?

Would you feel liberated?  Could you fly?

We can do ANYTHING.  You will never know until you try.
